We’re all familiar with the usual KPI’s (even if you haven’t implemented them I’m sure you’ve heard the term). As important as they are, in most cases they are aimed at the external results of your business. So your focus and attention goes towards achieving them. You determine your level of success based on those results and generally stress yourself out and overwork yourself until you reach your desired goals.
The problem is with all the focus being on your business and achieving ‘success’ you forget about yourself and your own wellbeing. You’re working excessive hours, eating whatever is most convenient, exercising when you can fit it in (which isn’t that often!), you’re exhausted and dragging yourself around and your mental state well it’s a bit all over the place. But you’re driven, determined and you’re on a mission to get your goals. Despite how you’re feeling you push on and continue to hustle.
From my own personal experience, there will come a day when you can’t push on and continue to hustle. After months and years of your body giving you warning signs that you need to bring in some yin to your very much yang lifestyle and you continuing to ignore the signs there will come a day when your body has just had enough! For me it was adrenal fatigue and anxiety that finally forced me to revaluate how I was showing up every day. Despite achieving success in my business and career I wasn’t achieving success in my overall wellbeing.
Even though I was eating well and exercising regularly I wasn’t taking any time out. I was very much in overdrive all day. My exercise was always high intensity – part stress relief and part I need to get my ideal body. I considered yoga a waste of time – I mean who has time in their day to spend an hour stretching (very naïve on my behalf after really getting into yoga and realising it’s so much more than stretching!). Being Type A my mind was always on and being an optimist always trying to find the positive in any situation and instead of dealing with any feelings or emotions that contradicted this were pushed down. I mean who has time to deal with that when you’ve got a empire to build.
What I’ve since realised, a healthy personal life and ultimate wellbeing is paramount to achieving sustainable success in your business and being able to operate at your ultimate best. Majority of us make our business our priority when in actual fact we need to make our health and wellbeing our priority because without it we won’t be able to run our business. As a highly driven person it is likely that you spend your days pushing and striving so hard that you burn out or at least are on the brink of it. Time and time again you continue to push with your body reacting to it in some way, yet you ignore the signs and continue to push on.
A lot of the time we tend to be motivated by fear, guilt and shame. Whether it’s fear of failure or not being good enough we feel that if we allow ourselves to just ‘be’, to rest and replenish ourselves it will be at the detriment of achieving our goals. Yet in actual fact, allowing ourselves the time to just ‘be’ in turn allows us to perform at our ultimate best. More importantly, it gives us the time to check in with ourselves to see how we really are feeling and if we’re giving ourselves everything we need on all levels, mind, body and soul or whether we’ve flatlined on every level. It also gives us the space to check in and see whether we are actually living the life we know we are capable of or if there is a gap between that life and the one that we meet every day.
If you find yourself responding with ‘busy’, ‘fine’ and ‘surviving’ when someone asks, ‘how are you?” when really you want to be responding with ‘I’m so great’ with a radiant smile and bounce in your step then you need to be aware of the daily life sources that fuel you to keep moving forward. Below are the 5 Daily Performance Measures that you need to be aware if you want to stay on top of your game in both business and life.
- Physical Energy – how did you physically feel today? did you move your body?
- Body Fuel – what did you put into your body? did it energise you or make you feel bloated and sluggish? how was your sleep?
- Social Connection – did you connect with anyone outside your business today? try to connect with someone every day.
- Mental Focus – how was your focus and concentration today? did you have a lot of mental chatter going on? Negative or Positive thoughts?
- Emotional Energy – what was your emotional energy like today? anything affecting your focus or progress that you need to deal with?
3 Actions To Help You Keep Track Of Your Wellbeing
- At the end of each day spend 5 minutes rating on a scale of 1-10 (10 being highest) how you went in each of the Daily Performance Measures. Compare this to how you performed in your business that day. Did your Daily Performance Measures have an impact on your productivity and performance in your business?
- At the end of the week review your results and look for any patterns. Are there any Daily Performance Measures that are consistently at the lower end of the scale and any that are consistently at the higher end?
- Based on your results, select one Daily Performance Measure that you can focus on for the next week that will make the biggest improvement on your quality of life if you improved it.
